The Parable of the Ten Virgins

This parable is one of the most solemn and searching of all the parables Christ uttered. It contains some of the most alarming truths and frightening facts of any of our Lord's parables. It was spoken by our Lord in the closing days of His earthly ministry as He was facing the agonies of Gethsemane and the pains of Calvary. It was spoken to His disciples from the Mount of Olives. The focal point of the parable is His second coming. Everything seems to be vitally related to that final, great event. Remember, this parable is part of our Lord's response to the disciple’s question, " . . . Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the age?" (Matt. 24:3) After He mentioned some signs He urged them to watch and be ready. He illustrated the importance of watchfulness and preparedness in His references to the householder (Matt. 24:43-44), the evil servant (Matt. 24:48-51), and now the ten virgins. It is noteworthy that He continues His theme in the verses immediately following the parable of the ten virgins (Matt.25:14-46). As our Lord spoke of His second coming He warned that the event would eventually come and would find many unprepared. In the parable of the ten virgins He utters the solemn warning of the uncertainty of the time of His return and the necessity of being prepared for the event.
